Cryptologic (CRYP) shows it is doing well even when its customer base and potential customer base faces potential arrest in the US. The US is still cracking down on online gambling site operators it feels are taking US citizen funds. The chairman of UK-based gambling firm Sportingbet is due to appear in court on Thursday after he was detained by US authorities. US authorities consider most forms of Internet gaming and gambling as illegal, assuming they haven't been approved and sanctioned by local, state, and federal governments. This arrest of 64-year old Peter Dicks follows the July detention of the then-head of BetOnSports David Carruthers on racketeering charges. For these guys to be hit with racketeering when they are acting legally inside their own borders and illegally in another country sets up an interesting legal precedent. It also makes you think what on God's earth would make ANY employee of an online gambling company ever set foot on US soil. The announcement of the suspension and halt of Sportingbet shares caused investors to sell with a "shoot first and ask questions later" mentality in other gambling stocks. In London trading today, shares in Partypoker fell by 11 per cent before recovering and shares in 888 Holdings slid over 15% per cent on this news. Sportingbet has recently announced it was in merger talks with a smaller rival called World gaming for some 56+ million Pounds. This is also what has hit Cryptologic (CRYP) today, with shares having been down as much as 4+% before recovering to -1.1% at $25.20. Oddly enough, CRYP has actually gone almost straight up since the first arrest of a foreign national running gaming sites. The shares were $20.00 and under around that time and now trade at $25.20. Cryptologic is located in Totonto, Canada and engages in developing and supplying online gaming software on the Internet casino and poker markets of the global online gaming industry. It also provides licensing, e-cash management, and customer support services for its Internet gaming software to third-party gaming operators. It even has Playboy as the new partner for that poker site. In early August Cryptologic offerred the following guidance: For Q3 2006, CryptoLogic forecasts revenue of $26.5-$27.0 million and earnings of $6.6-$7.0 million, or $0.48-$0.51 per diluted share. These estimates reflect the fact that Q3 is typically the softest quarter for Internet gaming, as players spend less time online during summer months. Also, licensees' poker room activity may decline between July 28 and August 10 when serious players are focused on the main event of the game's premier land-based tournament, the World Series of Poker. I mean meetings. You already ate your damn CEO/Creative Director paid pizza and soda. Suddenly, in a dark conference room... you hear voices. You hear the telephone dialing. You feel someone walking. Dell Tries To Show The Flag

Stocks: (VG)(VZ)(CMCSA)(EBAY)(TWX) In a move that many would consider foolhardy, the founder of Vonage, Jeffrey Citron, told Reuters that the company would continue to invest extremely large sums in customer acquisitions. He acknowledged that investors might not warm to the idea for at least two quarters, But, Wall St may not warm to it at all. He also made the observation that the company could lose money at the current rate and not run out of cash for 10 quarters. Talking about when the cash is gone is not always considered good investor relations. According to the Vonage 10-Q, the company spent $90.2 billion on marketing in the quarter ending June 30. In the same quarter in 2005, the marketing number was $60.9 million. Between the two periods, revenue did rise from $59.4 million to $143.4 million. But the operating loss also rose, from $65 million to $73.6 million. The 10-Q also says that the company believes that its strategy of increasing marketing costs is what will eventually lead to profitability. A close look at the numbers indicates that the Vonage strategy may work. Subscriptions rose from 847,849 as of June 30, 2005 to 1,853, 253 at the end of June 1006. The market decided to hammer Dell because it will delay filing its earnings. Big deal. Dell is donw 3.5% to $20.90. By 10:30, the stock had traded about 20 million shares. The company announced weeks ago that it would have to look at accruals in its financials. At a company Dell's size, that cannot be done overnight. It is also highly unlikely that the probe will result in any changes in the company's cash flow or reserves. Does it justify taking $1 billion off the company's market cap. Probably not. Dell has much more significant problems that a potential restatement. Slow growth ,shrinking margins, and poor customer service are at the top of that list. But, the market has already discounted the shares of that. Much as Apple's shares quickly recovered when the company said it had an options problem and the HP probe has had little affect on the company's share price, Dell's delayed filing is not likely to change anything. In its incredible musicianship and careful craftsmanship, The Argument also makes evident the immense care with which this quartet goes about the business of record making. The album begins with the stellar backbone of drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally providing a peerless rhythm section for guitarists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto to play off of. Tracks like "Full Disclosure" and "Life and Limb" expertly showcase the interplay between the four musicians, the backbeat providing a rock-solid foundation from which the twin guitars take flight. Yet it's the sixth track, "The Kill," that takes this work to places earlier Fugazi efforts have rarely gone. Rising out of a delicate, almost gauzy beat, the song feels as if it's exploring every corner of its considerable acoustical range. Following on the heels of this is the album's centerpiece, the brilliant "Strangelight," showcasing a patient, more focused Fugazi, willing to take greater chances with its sound, each member trusting their fellow bandmates' talents implicitly. GO-SL and Phylo-SL

So, I have a studio space that holds a 9 metre infodisk and a few people. For the moment it's a workshop but I can think in terms of using it for small meetings and events as well as mapping out what an immersive sim might look like, how it might work and be used by students. I want to be able to retract the roof and/or wall(s) and I might want to strip out the Skidz Primz code too. I guess it could function as a small holodeck/holoroom at a pinch (and if I had the cash). I suspect I must also be running low on prims (he says looking enviously at the adjacent empty plot). Thinking out loud (as ever), it might be cute to populate one wall with a storage system that could rez stuff out into some meaningful 3D structure or maybe a 2D phylogenetic tree from which bacterial species dangle (and can be detached for further inspection; Phylo-SL). Perhaps a 2D-to-3D representation of (relevant parts of) the Gene Ontology (GO) even (GO-SL; I wonder if GO Lite for teaching already exists?). Maybe think of other subjective criteria for resolving species into 2D/3D space (ecology, pathogenicity, industrial application)? There'd be a significant prim count involved so rezzing would need to be dynamic, i.e. generate temporary prims. At this stage I'm thwarted somewhat by lack of a database-enabled server and I can't see that joining the SLashup space at Eduserv is going to help there; pity neither dabbleDb nor Freebase support XML-RPC out-of-the-box (need for a third-party adaptor service there?). I guess I might also need to check out some graph theory in order to generate coordinates (eeek; maybe Hiro could help). I know this is all didactic stuff but I think it might be fun to explore and even be a prelude to a sim.
